Living Hope

Romans 15:13-May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.
That word, hope, has been a challenging one for me lately. During my almost 3 week break, I was really trying to encourage myself to be positive and hopeful this year. I've been praying that God would bring hope to me. But, I must say, I'm struggling a bit. Yes, these last 3.5 months have been incredible. I can tell that I am growing greatly in my faith and as a nurse. And I am grateful for this opportunity and the people I have met. But, I must also acknowledge that I have never been so spiritually, mentally, and emotionally challenged before. As I told my friend Rebecca, This place messes with your mind. And it is definitely messing with mine. There are a lot of reasons for this and I won't go into all of them now. I'd love to talk with those who are interested when I return, but I am constantly confronted with issues of injustice, mistrust, racial tension, disease, and spiritual oppresion. I realize I came here with a very Western way of thinking and doing things and I'm being humbled more and more that my ways will not work here. That only God can provide hope and healing. Rather than strategies, I need to build relationships and show people I care about them and that they are loved by the God who created them. Only then, do I believe people will have hope and make positive changes and build out of poverty, anger, and disease.
John 15:5-I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
This verse has been speaking to me because I am learning more and more that I must be abiding in Christ in order to bear fruit. Believe me, there is too much suffering and pain in the world for us to do it by setting up organizations and giving money and opening health clinics and..... It won't work because the reality is people need more than that. They need more than money and clinics and schools. They need to know that their life is worthy and meaningful. Otherwise, people will continue to not protect their life against HIV or drink alcohol when they are pregnant knowing the consequences or... because they don't consider their life to have any worth. But it does. God cares about every detail of our lives and created us with purpose.
Thanks for letting me verbally processing or I guess journaling my thoughts. Its been a confusing week and it helps to write it out. I'll share a quick story that does give me great hope and shows me that my faith is only a small amount of what it could be.

On Christmas Eve, I went with others from the church to a government hospital in a township where we send most of our patients. I have heard horror stories about the government hospitals here so wasn't too surprised by the conditions I saw. We visited the pediatric wards and gave out presents and prayed for people. Most of the patients are in a big ward with 10-20 beds and no privacy, but there are a few small rooms off to the side that are private. I went into one of those rooms and there was a crying mother and her incredibly sick baby. The baby was 3 months old and severely sick. In medical terms, the baby was malnourished and was grunting and retracting with every breath. It's entire tiny body was working in order to take each breath. I thought to myself that they are in the private room because the nurses are expecting this baby to die and want the family to have privacy. The mother expressed she would like prayer so I called a few other women into the room that spoke the mother's language and we prayed over the baby and mother. I honestly thought as we prayed that we may witness her last breaths. I was praying more for the mother to be comforted and no pain for the baby than for any type of miracle because it seemed beyond that point. It turned out that the mother was from the township that we are working into and so one of the women (Sophy a health care worker in home based care) got her phone number to keep in touch with them. Last Sunday, Sophy came running up to me all excited and told me that she had called them mom and that the baby was doing well and had been discharged home. I couldn't believe it. And I realized that God is much greater than I give Him credit for. We need to expect the miraculous and I am learning that here.

I hope that story gives you encouragement and I hope you have a blessed week.

Molly,
I am inspired by your faith, compassion, sacrifice, and self-awareness. Your writing style is skilled and expressive and illustrates the depth of your personal experiences. When I read your last post I felt (and get the impression that to some degree you also feel) ignorant and powerless in a world that is vast and overwhelming. I want you to know that I have faith in you, and faith in God's power through you.
Your story of the sick baby strikes me as symbolic of the struggle we all face as humans. We are all broken and imperfect, but faith and community can heal us and give us hope. God is awesome! You truly are changing the world and the world is changing you.
You're in my loving thoughts and prayers.
Always,
Shannon

You are doing God's work, and as such Satan is sure to be after you... to discourage you, to try to make you doubt the goodness of our Lord. This is a prayer to prepare for spiritual warfare that I try to say every morning... I pray that it encourages you to hope in the only source of true strength that we can rely on... Christ, his Father God, and the Holy Spirit. I pray you find peace in the overwhelming safety of His Perfect Victory!

Prayer of Victory:

Loving heavenly Father, we praise you that Satan is a defeated foe. We rejoice that his defeat was accomplished by the Lord Jesus Christ in his sinless life, death, burial, Ressurection, and Ascension into glory. We look forward to that day when the Lord Jesus Christ rules, while Satan is bound. We rejoice that you have given to us, in our union with the Lord Jesus Christ, complete victory over Satan today.

By faith, we express our desire to abide in the protection and blessing of the mighty name of the Lord Jesus Christ. We pray the power of his name over our families, our community and over all you have give us and called us to do. We pray the name of the Lord Jesus Christ against Satan and all that his kingdom would do to hinder God's plan for our lives.

We enter into our victory aggressively and claim our place as more than a conqueror (Rom 8:37) through him that loved us. We refuse to admit continuing defeat by Satan in any area of our lives. He cannot and will not rule over us. We are dead with Chrsit to Satan's rule.

We praise you for the Cross and death of the Lord Jesus Christ, desiring all the benefits of his death to focus upon our lives, families, our community, and all of your children. We affirm that our death with Christ can defeat the control and rule of sin, of death, and of Satan. We desire the blood of Christ to be against all that Satan is doing to hinder us.

Grant to us the grace to affirm your victory even when experiences of life seem to say otherwise. Grant to us the wisdom to know that the fierceness of the battle is not evidence of defeat.

We thank you for each phase of all battles we may and will experience and thank you for all that you are seeking to accomplish in your wisdom and design for our lives. We accept the battles and rejoice in your purpose.

We willingly accept and desire to profit from all of your purpose in letting Satan's kingdom affect us, for we know that Satan cannot come through the wall and hedge of protection you raise up for your children without your express consent and will. We reject all of Satan's purpose. We thank you for what you are doing by allowing Satan's kingdom to war against us. Use the battle to refine, to deepen, to mature, to humble and to build our faith.

Grant to us the insight and understanding to know our victory. We desire that the roots of our assurance of victory would go down deeply into the essential doctrines of your Word. We want to see our community here as being invincibly strong through our union with Christ, the Person and work of the Holy Spirit, the wholeness of your provided armor, the effectiveness of prayer, and the communion of loyalty and obedience to your Church. Teach us how to appropriate our victory in a practical daily practice.

Throught the victory of our Lord and Saviour, we stand resolute and strong upon the certainty of our victory. In confidence, we look to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Humbly we use the authority of our union with Christ to pull down all of Satan's strongholds and all of his plans formed against us personally, against our families, and against God's appointed plan for our lives.

We deliberately submit our lives to your Lordship and to the guidance or your Church. We acknowledge that everything good about our lives, homes, and all that you have given and called us to is because of your Lordship and Blessing.

By faith, we claim our invincible right to be strong and victorious in your complete salvasion. We refuse to be discouraged. We reject all emotions that make us feel defeated. We choose to live as those who are more than conquerors through Jesus Christ our Lord.

When your purpose for each of the trials that come into our lives is fulfilled, we know that it will fade into the dimness of forgetten battles and a defeated enemy. Thre the precious name of the Lord Jesus Christ with all thanksgiving, it shall be so. AMEN.

The ministry of your obedience to the call of Christ in your life is a great encouragement to answer the call of Christ in mine... thank you Molly... may the sweet joy of Christ be your constant companion and fill your heart with the hope that only he can bring you.... the joy of the Lord is my strength, Joce
